HONG KONG, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries on Thursday:

TOKYO -- Tokyo confirmed a record 5,042 COVID-19 cases, topping the 5,000-mark for the first time, with an all-time high of 15,263 new cases nationwide until 6:30 p.m. local time, local media reported Thursday.

The Japanese government decided Thursday to expand the COVID-19 quasi-state of emergency to eight more prefectures, with alcohol serving banned in principle, as the highly contagious Delta COVID-19 variant is spreading rapidly in these areas.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 20,596 new COVID-19 infections in the highest daily spike since the outbreak, bringing the national total to 1,203,706, the Health Ministry said.

Another 164 deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 10,019.

A total of 13,893 more patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total cured and discharged to 976,626 or 81.1 percent of all cases.

JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Health Ministry reported that the coronavirus cases across the country rose by 35,764 within the past 24 hours to 3,568,331, with the death toll adding by 1,739 to 102,375.

The ministry said 39,726 more patients were discharged from hospitals, raising the total number of recoveries from the pandemic in the Southeast Asian country to 2,947,646, according to the ministry.

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan on Wednesday confirmed 5,661 new COVID-19 cases, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said on Thursday.

The NCOC, a department leading Pakistan's campaign against the pandemic, said that the country's overall confirmed cases reached 1,053,660, including 952,616 recoveries.

The number of active cases dropped to 77,409, including 4,050 critical patients.

The NCOC added that the pandemic killed 60 people on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 23,635.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 1,776 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Wednesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 205,702.

The daily caseload was up from 1,725 in the prior day, hovering above 1,000 for 30 straight days. The daily average tally for the past week was 1,516.

Three more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 2,109. The total fatality rate stood at 1.03 percent.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's COVID-19 case total has surged to 80,225 after 591 fresh infections were confirmed across the country, the health ministry said in a statement.

Nineteen more fatalities were reported, taking the overall death toll to 1,507, it said, adding that 618 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 73,421.

As of Aug. 4, some 7.7 million people including 7.54 million adults and 163,201 adolescents have received at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccines, accounting for 48 percent of the kingdom's total population, the ministry said.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 31,812,114 as 42,982 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

Besides, as many as 533 deaths were recorded since Wednesday morning, taking the death toll to 426,290.

Currently there are 411,076 active cases in the country with an increase of 723 during the period.

MANILA -- The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 8,127 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,627,816.

The death toll climbed to 28,427 after 196 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH added.

The DOH confirmed 116 new Delta variant cases in the Philippines, raising the total cases to 331. All the newly-reported Delta cases including 95 local cases have recovered.
