Mass transit riders will pay more to get around the county.
A bus fare increase for Broward County Transit goes into effect Oct. 1.
Broward County commissioners last year agreed to raise fares over a two-year period. The vote was 6-2, with commissioners Marty Kiar and Tim Ryan voting no. The increase is expected to raise $6 million over two years.
For some riders, such as county employees and those who purchase the 31-day adult bus pass, fares are rising for the second year in a row. Others, such as college students, saw their rates go up last year but won’t see any increase this time.
The changes:
One-way fare goes up 25 cents, to $2. An all-day bus pass increases $1, to $5. A seven-day or 10-ride pass increases by $2 for the second year in a row, now to $20.
A 31-day adult bus pass increases by $5, to $70. Before last year’s increase, that same pass was sold for $58.
A book of 25 transit fare tickets rises in price $10, to $50.
Fares for seniors, youth, county employees and disabled people also will rise.
College students saw their fares go up $10 last year; this year they will still pay $50 for a 31-day pass.
Rates for paratransit and premium express also will remain steady.
Current bus passes will be honored through their expiration date.
