Ogwumike, who played in the WNBA, was also one of the first and youngest pundits to be selected an NBA analyst. She was also the first Black woman and WNBA player to anchor a national radio show for ESPN.

In Cypress, Texas, she attended Cypress Fairbanks High School. She won the 5A State Championship as a sophomore and senior in high school. She previously has been selected as a WBCA and McDonald’s All-American. She attended Stanford University after graduating from high school, where she majored in International relations. She participated in three final fours during her college career, and on January 3, 2014, she held the record for the most rebounds in the history of Stanford Women’s Basketball and the Pac-12 Conference, which is now held by Kelsey Plum of Washington.

The Connecticut Sun selected Ogwumike first overall in the 2014 WNBA draft, and she has remained with the team since. Her average stats were 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. She and her sister Nneka Ogwumike were the first candidates chosen for the WNBA All-Star game shortly after joining the league. Following that, Ogwumike was named WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2014. She did not play the next year, though, since she was healing from a microfracture in her right knee.

She returned in 2016 and appeared in 33 games, averaging 12.6 points per game. She defeated the Dallas Wings in a game during that period. Unfortunately, she had to have surgery the following year after tearing her Achilles tendon during a WNBA off-season game in China. As a result, she was unable to participate in the 2017 WNBA season. Chiney was also chosen as Vice President of the WNBA Players Association.

Furthermore, she has played for clubs in Europe, including Europe in the 2014-2015 European season and Italian Familia Schio. In 2016, she signed with the WCBA’s Henan Yichuan for the 2016-17 season in China. She was also a member of the USA U18 basketball squad. She got a multi-year contract with ESPN in May 2018 to become a full-time sports analyst. Chiney returned to the Sun in their season debut the same year, playing her first WNBA game in two years. In 17 minutes of action, she scored 9 points in a 101-65 victory over the Las Vegas Aces. Aside from that, she played in the 2018 WNBA All-Star Game for the second time.

She reunited with her sister in 2019 after being traded to the Los Angeles Sparks for a 2020 first-round pick. The Sparks finished third that season, bidding farewell to the second season. However, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by their former squad, the Connecticut Sun. She left the team in 2020 owing to a health issue. She was also the first Black woman to host a national radio show for ESPN.

Aside from that, she is one of the youngest NBA analysts to be hired full-time by ESPN. Chiney & Golic Jr. was a radio show that she co-hosted with Mike Golic Jr. She eventually became a rotating in-studio analyst for the daily program NBA Today. Furthermore, Ogwumike re-signed with the Sparks on a multi-year contract in February 2021.
