A man who was rescued from a burning apartment in Hollywood died from his injuries at the hospital Monday morning, police said.

Police and Hollywood Fire Rescue were called to the scene in the 1700 block of Dewey Street about 5:30 a.m., where the back of an apartment unit was on fire, said Deanna Bettineschi, a spokesperson for Hollywood Police.

One person was taken to the hospital in critical condition, city spokesperson Kris Rebar said. Extensive smoke damage was contained to the rear unit of the building.

The man died from his injuries at Memorial Regional Hospital, Bettineschi said. Hollywood Police and the State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause, Bettineschi said.

Additional information was not released. It was not clear Monday afternoon whether anyone else was inside the apartment.
