David Axelrod is a well-known American former White House official, political adviser, and analyst who currently works as the Senior Political Commentator for CNN. He also serves as the non-partisan director of the University of Chicago Institute of Politics. David is well-known for serving as Barrack Obama’s main strategist during his presidential campaigns, and he was moved to Senior Adviser to the President following the election.

After working as the City Hall Bureau Chief and a political columnist for The Chicago Tribune, David left the magazine in 1984 to join Paul Simon’s campaigns as communications director. A year later, he founded Axelrod & Associates, a political consulting firm.
Harold Washington, Chicago’s first black mayor, recruited David in 1987. He quickly rose to prominence as a significant figure in the campaign for black politicians. David has campaigned for various black candidates, including Philadelphia’s John F. Street, Cleveland’s Michael R. White, Washington’s Anthony A. Williams, Detroit’s Dennis Archer, and Houston’s Lee P. Brown.
David was engaged as a media strategist for Oregon Governor Neil Goldschmidt’s re-election campaign in January. However, Neil Goldschmidt stated in February that he would not run for re-election. The Liberal Party of Ontario kept David to assist Dalton McGuinty in winning the elections.
He also served as a consultant for Exelon, an Illinois-based utility that managed the world’s largest fleet of nuclear reactors. He worked on numerous successful campaigns in 2006. His successful campaigns include those for Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
He is currently the Senior Political Commentator at CNN, where he has worked since 2015. In addition, he works as the Director of the non-partisan Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago. He also presents The Axe Files podcast.
His first position as a journalist was at the Hyde Park Herald, where he worked as a writer specializing in politics.
