The RPG of Mass Effect lets players choose different outcomes throughout the narrative of the story. With the different cause-and-effect consequences at every turn, some players experience killing off Shepard in the trilogy. Players sacrifice the main protagonist depending on the ending of the story and the trilogy of the game. In Mass Effect 2, Joker is the only survivor after the collector's base is destroyed, killing Shepard and his team. But the consequences aren't affected for the third installment; as Mass Effect 3 will actually count for its last installment.

Data-mining a 7-year-old subreddit Mass Effect post, fans speculate that a certain ending for Mass Effect 3 has Shepard killed from one of the 8 different endings, "My Shepard would spend a few months in the hospital recovering from unprotected-atmospheric-reentry-syndrome. Then retire somewhere warm and tropical with Tali and live off the royalties from the vids." Reddit user Mocha80 comments with their own happy ending.

Fans are still coping with one of the endings for Mass Effect 3 from the original. The perfect ending after the victory shows Shepard with his dog-tag in city rubble taking a breath or his last one before the credits roll. With Mass Effect Legendary Edition coming out, we may get more answers if Shepard dies permanently or survives the journey.
