Gamecock Jesus Obituary; Man Identified As ‘Gamecock Jesus’ Has passed Away.

Gamecock country is in deep sorrow over the passing of one of its most prominent and well-known superfans.
Carlton Thompson, aka “Gamecock Jesus,” has departed from this life.
He was seventy years old.
For many years, Thompson’s optimism and love for Gamecock athletics inspired the fan base.

Still in shock, USC women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley said in an exclusive interview on Wednesday morning that he leaves behind a strong legacy.

She described him as “God-like.” He showed by example. He demonstrated his religion and demonstrated his humanity as a giver and caregiver.

For the past year, Thompson has been fighting prostate cancer, and Staley felt as though a teammate was absent.

She remarked that in a world gone cynical, his generosity and cheerfulness will be much missed.

“Carlton Thompson, our beloved ‘Gamecock Jesus,’ has the best seat in the house tonight,” Gamecock Athletics said in a social media post honoring Thompson. He was a huge gamecock fan. We cherished him.

Gamecock Jesus, with his distinctive beard, lively personality, and trademark smile, has come to represent Gamecock sports.

He was well-known for his flag, which he would wave assiduously, and for his boisterous and enthusiastic applause during athletic events for all teams.

Thompson revealed that his adoration began in 1968 in a September interview with Judi Gatson of WIS.

On Wednesday night, during their home game, the Gamecocks women’s basketball team observed a moment of silence in honor of Gamecock Jesus.

Gamecock legend A’ja Wilson wrote on X, “This one is heartbreaking.” Peace be with our biggest fan. I appreciate your unwavering support and attendance on practically every game day. Your virtuous banner will never stop flying.

The institution highlighted on X a ride that Thompson had with Harris Pastides, the USC president at the time, further proving his devotion to the Gamecocks.

The university included video of Thompson supporting his beloved team by waving the Gamecock flag in the stands.
