Jess spent her childhood in Detroit, where she received her education at George Ford Elementary School and Mackenzie High School. She furthered her education at Western Michigan University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education with majors in Communication and Sociology and minors in English and Psychology.
He attended Harvard Business School, Duke University, the University of North Carolina, Northwestern University, and Northwood Institute for his post-graduate education. Jess worked in the field of broadcasting sales and marketing for a total of twenty-five years, during which time he represented the following companies: Fetzer Broadcasting/WKZO-TV, Petry Television in Detroit and Chicago, Jefferson Pilot Broadcasting in Charlotte, North Carolina, Seltel Television/Detroit, and WWTV/WWUP TV in Cadillac and Traverse City. After leaving the broadcasting industry, Jess eventually started his own business, which he ran for another twenty-five years: Annuities, life, health, disability, and long-term care insurance are the areas of expertise of the Chalker $ Associates Insurance Agency.
Due to health concerns, he decided to retire when he was 65 years old. Over the course of more than 15 years, Jess served as a Chanter at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Troy, where he was a member of the congregation. Over the course of his life, Jess had a deep affection for his family and friends, and he humbly requests forgiveness for whatever suffering he may have caused.
