Hisaishi’s compositions were influenced by Japanese popular music, electronic music, and New Age music, as well as the Japanese electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra, in the 1970s. He began with minimalist ideas then progressed to symphonic work. He gave his first public performance around 1975. His debut album, MKWAJU, came out in 1981, and his second, the electropop-minimalist Information, came out a year later. Hajime Ningen Gyatoruz (1974) and Robokko Beeton (1976) were his first notable anime scores.
As his fame grew, Hisaishi adopted a pseudonym inspired by American musician and composer Quincy Jones: “Quincy,” pronounced “Kuinsh” in Japanese, can be spelled using the same kanji as “Hisaishi,” while “Joe” was derived from “Jones.”
