Lanny became CBS’s lead analyst for over four years after Ken Venturi retired in June 2002. He was there until the 2006 season when he was replaced by Nick Faldo. Lanny is currently the chief analyst for the Champions Tour on Golf Channel. During his commentary, he is noted for shouting “Billy Ray” all the time. Billy Ray Brown provides on-course commentary.
In October 1972, he won his first PGA Tour event, the Sahara Invitational in Las Vegas. Lanny finished one stroke ahead of Palmer, his scholarship sponsor. In 1972, he was named Rookie of the Year on the tour. Two more victories followed in 1973 before his form slumped for three years.
He won the PGA Championship, his sole major title, in 1977. He beat Gene Littler in a sudden-death playoff at Pebble Beach on the third hole. The sudden-death format was utilized in a stroke-play major tournament for the first time. Lanny finished second in four subsequent majors, including the US Open in 1986 and the PGA Championship in 1982, 1984, and 1987. In 1990, 1991, and 1993, he finished third in the Masters.
His best Open Championship finish was fourth in 1984 at St. Andrews. He won The Players Championship at Sawgrass on the PGA Tour in 1979. He was also named PGA Player of the Year in 1985. Lanny won more seasons than not during his career until 1992 when he won his 21st and final PGA Tour title at the Canon Greater Hartford Open.
Lanny, like many other top American golfers, was asked to compete in several international competitions. He won the Victorian PGA Championship, an Australian event, in 1978. He won the Bridgestone Open, a Japan Golf Tour event, in 1979. He also placed second in the 1980 Air New Zealand Shell Open, the 1990 Austrian Open, and the 1979 German Open. He also won unofficial competitions in South America, Canada, and Japan.
He represented the United States in the Ryder Cup eight times between 1977 and 1993, tying him with Raymond Floyd and Billy Casper for the most appearances by an American. During his Ryder Cup career, he earned 2.5 points. He has one of the best records on either side in the competition’s history. He also captained the team at Oak Hill Country Club in 1995.
