Layoffs at the Motorola Mobility facility in Plantation are expected to begin Oct. 23, according to a notice filed with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
About 198 employees will be laid off from the campus at 8000 W. Sunrise Blvd.
Lenovo, which owns Motorola Mobility, said this week that it plans to lay off 3,200 people worldwide from its non-manufacturing operations. The move is expected to help cut expenses by about $650 million in the second half of this year and about $1.35 billion annually, Lenovo said.
Employees at Motorola Mobility in Plantation do mobile research, according to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.
The affected employees will be able to apply for other jobs within the company, said the notice filed with the state. The company said it also will offer career transition services via Right Management Solutions.
Employees who don’t get another job within the company will be eligible for severance pay and benefits, the notice said.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity says the state’s CareerSource agencies give direct services to people who lose their jobs. Assistance available includes job training and an online job search tool.
As of July, Florida had more than 273,900 jobs open, including more than 22,000 in Broward County, according to the department.
Motorola has been part of South Florida’s tech community for more than 30 years. In 2011, it split into two companies, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions.
Motorola Solutions is under separate ownership and not part of the announced closure.
