Letters to the Editor | North Perry airport is too dangerous | Letters to the editor

Yet another airplane crash occurred at North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines, killing a flight instructor and a passenger, according to Saturday’s Sun Sentinel.

This is the third crash in three months and there have been nearly 20 in the past five years involving this death trap.

There are two basic reasons for plane crashes: pilot error and mechanical failure. Is anyone in county, state or federal government policing these two vital safety protocols?

How many more people have to die before something is done?

We have lived in the flight path of North Perry since 1966, and we hold our breath every time one of these hopefully certified pilots flies one of their airplanes over our house.

‘Slitting throats’

Regarding the letter to the editor from Don Dietrick about a Ron DeSantis political cartoon being malicious and despicable, and that people at the newspaper should be fired, he just had his argument nullified by DeSantis himself. On firing federal workers, he said: “On bureaucracy, you know, we’re going to have all these deep state people, you know, we’re going to start slitting throats on Day One and be ready to go.” Our governor actually made this statement.

No federal employee should face a death threat from anyone, even as a figure of speech, and least of all from someone seeking to lead the U.S. government. While I remarked to a friend about the cartoon being naughty but funny; pulling wings off a fly in a cartoon is not comparable with advocating violence against any human being.

DeSantis is disgusting, and he has just disqualified himself for president.

About those TV listings

I am aggravated and disappointed that you got rid of the TV guide and replaced it with your recommendations of things to watch. I am 80 years old and I do not like any of the programs that you recommend. In fact, I consider most of them garbage.

I want to know when the PBS nature shows are on, as well the cooking shows and craft shows and Wheel of Fortune, which is sometimes preempted by football games. Thank you for your good reporting on climate change and your excellent opinion pages and editorials.

No perfect choices

If the next presidential race is between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, we voters will do what we have always done: Vote.

Has there been an election in recent history where the candidate was absolutely what we wanted in office? (Barack Obama was pretty close for me, but that was an exception to my example rule.)

No, there have always been things that didn’t sit quite right, for me at least. Hopefully, we consider the big picture of a candidate and consider the people with whom they would surround themselves and build that into our decision. At some point, we have to open our minds to the possibility that the office does not serve in a vacuum; we must see the big picture. Just how closed have our minds become?

We are not going to move to Canada or sit at home and sulk. We’re going to vote for the best possible option and continue our democratic republic.

Trump and television

The downside of televising Donald Trump’s upcoming criminal trial(s) is that it would result in humongous free publicity for him. Remember, this whole miserable, democracy-destroying mess began with his televised pandering to little guys who reveled in other people being fired and humiliated before the world.
