The Miami Dolphins continue to restructure the defensive side of their coaching staff since coach Mike McDaniel hired new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.
The Dolphins are hiring former Tennessee Titans outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow to serve in the same role in Miami, according to a league source Wednesday.
That, however, does not mean last season’s outside linebackers coach, Ryan Slowik, is on his way out. A source also tells the South Florida Sun Sentinel that Slowik is remaining on the Dolphins’ coaching staff but in a different role in 2024 that is yet to be determined.
Crow was Tennessee’s outside linebackers coach since 2021, but he wasn’t retained amid the head coaching change from former Titans coach Mike Vrabel to new head man Brian Callahan. Crow was an assistant under Vrabel for his entire six-year tenure in Tennessee.
In Miami, Crow will be tasked with getting the most out of a talented group of edge rushers — but a unit that has major question marks in 2024 with Jaelan Phillips rehabbing an Achilles tear and Bradley Chubb coming back from a torn ACL in his knee. Fellow outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, a valued Dolphins defender since 2019, is a free agent.
For Phillips’ part, he posted video on social media Wednesday of his first steps since suffering the Achilles tear Nov. 24.
The Dolphins, since hiring Weaver to lead the defense, have already replaced former linebackers coach Anthony Campanile with former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Barry will also serve as run-game coordinator.
Campanile and Slowik were both internal candidates for the Dolphins interviewing for the defensive coordinator position vacated by Vic Fangio’s departure to the Philadelphia Eagles, but McDaniel opted for Weaver, coming over after being the Baltimore Ravens defensive line coach and assistant head coach.
The Miami defense still has an opening at safeties coach, as Joe Kasper left to join Fangio’s staff in Philadelphia.
