Services were held Friday for Dr. Robert Rosenthal, who served in many leadership positions at Boca Raton Community Hospital, including co-medical director and chief of cardiology.
Dr. Rosenthal died on Thursday. He was 53. Cause of death was unavailable.
“It’s just a tremendous loss to our medical community here in Boca,” said Dr. Peter M. Schosheim, president of the hospital’s medical staff. “It is a very sad day in our medical community.”
Dr. Rosenthal’s colleagues said he was deeply admired for his knowledge of the profession and his caring spirit.
“He was truly a devoted physician to all his patients,” Schosheim said of his friend of eight years. “He was literally the first in the hospital making rounds with his patients, and he was the last to leave at night.”
News of his death shocked the hospital’s staff, officials said.
“It was unbelievable to see all the doctors in the hospital being very upset,” Schosheim said.
“He was truly loved and respected by all his colleagues and cardiology staff and nurses at the hospital.”
Dr. Rosenthal was well-known for his mini-seminars at the hospital on how to prevent and treat heart disease through exercise, nutrition and drug therapy.
He also was considered an expert on risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.
Dr. Rosenthal is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janet; two sons Michael and Marc; mother Lillian Rosenthal; and a brother, Allan Rosenthal of Boca Raton.
Services were at Congregation B’nai Torah in Boca Raton. And interment followed at Eternal Light Cemetery in West Boynton.
The Robert Rosenthal M.D. Memorial Fund has been established by the hospital’s foundation.
