Richard Engel is an illustrious American journalist and author currently working for NBC News as the chief foreign correspondent since April 18, 2008. He joined the station in May 2003 serving as Middle East correspondent and Beirut bureau chief. Prior to joining NBC, he worked as a freelance journalist for ABC News in Baghdad.

He commenced his journalism career after graduating and moving to Cairo. Richard learned Egyptian Arabic and served for four years as a freelance reporter in Cairo. Later, he joined The World as a Middle East correspondent. The World is a joint production of WGBH, Public Radio International (PRI), and BBC World Service.
Subsequently, he joined USA Today as a reporter and later to Jane’s Defence Weekly, AFP, and Reuters. He later joined ABC News as their freelance journalist. Richard also worked for NBC as a primary Iraq correspondent. There, he covered the war between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon serving as a Beirut bureau chief and senior Middle East correspondent in 2006.
Furthermore, in April 2008, Richard was named Chief Foreign Correspondent of NBC News. Richard reported on the August presidential election in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2009, and also covered the Egyptian revolution in 2011. However, Richard was almost shot while reporting the Libyan Civil War. He also toured and reported on the city of Mogadishu, Somalia in the same year.
Moreover, Richard earned a News and Documentary Emmy Award nomination for his segment. Furthermore, he sometimes hosts MSNBC’s special series On Assignment with Richard Engel. In 2019, Richard’s show received the Peabody Award.
