STYLE Edit: Why Celine’s Matelasse Monochrome is the new Parisian ‘It’ bag – a classic, versatile, quilted accessory that effortlessly pairs with everything

The bag was one of the most talked-about items on show at the event, and it has been turning heads ever since being first modelled by Blackpink star Lisa and model Kaia Gerber, two of Celine’s brand ambassadors, both of whom have subsequently sported the bag on social media.

Part of the reason the Matelasse Monochrome has become an immediate favourite is its versatility, with the simplicity of its design allowing it to be incorporated into an almost limitless palette of looks.

The bag comes in nude, black and brown, making it a versatile piece for sophisticated and casual looks.

Available in a choice of three colours – nude, black and brown – it is fashioned from goatskin, with a lambskin interior, along with a snap button closure and a flat inner pocket. The logo features the whole of the Celine name spelled out in gold, while the chunky chain-link strap is long enough at 32cm to allow it to be worn as either a shoulder bag or cross-body.

Celine has developed a reputation for making some of the most coveted bags on the market. They are known for being highly structured and coming in clean, classic shapes, along with an achingly Parisian vibe. Many boast the brand’s famous “C” logo, often in the distinctive “double C” rendition, with the two letters facing away from each other, which first emerged in the 1970s, inspired by the curves of another Parisian icon, the Arc de Triomphe.

Celine offers a variety of coveted handbags in its autumn/winter 2022-23 collection.

The C collection is where you’ll find numerous other quilted bags besides the Matelasse, but the maison is also responsible for a startling variety of other styles that have become part of “It” bag history, including the likes of the double-C rectangular Triomphe shoulder bag; the jaunty, jumbo-sized Luggage; the practical, minimalist Belt; the charmingly retro-styled 16; and the relaxed, graphic Cabas.

Celine’s success is the culmination of a long journey from its origins as a children’s shoe business in the period immediately after the Second World War. Since the 1960s it has been transformed into the luxury maison so widely known today, with the maison continuing its evolution since 2018 under French couture legend Hedi Slimane, who as artistic, creative and image director has brought a more edgy, youth-driven, rock ’n’ roll aesthetic.

As the Matelasse Monochrome bag shows, though, the classic spirit is still alive and well at the house too.
