Toddler hospitalized after falling from second floor window at beach resort, deputies say

A toddler was hospitalized Tuesday after falling out of a second floor window at a Pompano Beach resort, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea deputies were called to the Surf Rider Resort at 1445 S. Ocean Blvd. shortly before noon and found the child, said Gerdy St. Louis, a Sheriff’s spokesperson.

The boy was playing near a window and “pushed on a screen that broke away from the frame,” St. Louis said. His relatives tried to catch him, but he fell from the second story.

The boy’s condition was not known Tuesday night.

Sherriff’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives went to the resort and are investigating the fall.

Florida Division of Corporations records say the Surf Rider Condominium Association filed as a business in 1980. One- and two-bedroom units are available for daily and weekly rentals, according to the resort’s website.

“Due to the strict privacy policies of our resort, we do not disclose any incidents of negligence on the part of our guests,” Michael Sobel, general manager at Surf Rider Condominium Association, said in a text Tuesday night in response to a voicemail seeking comment. “However, we are grateful that there were no serious injuries reported.”
