Tom Cruise is a Florida man, report says

One of the world’s biggest movie stars now calls the Sunshine State home, People magazine is reporting.

Tom Cruise has bought a penthouse in Clearwater near the Church of Scientology’s international headquarters, the celebrity magazine reported in the cover story of its Aug. 6 issue.

Cruise, 56, sold his properties in Beverly Hills, including a sprawling estate that sold for $39 million, according to the story, which is headlined: “Inside the Mysteries of Tom Cruise’s Life at 56: Leaving L.A., Staying Single and Working Nonstop.”

The Top Gun star has recently been living in a London hotel while filming movies in the U.K.’s capital city, but has “also been busy renovating a penthouse apartment in Clearwater, Fla. as a new home base,” People reported.

Cruise is famously a Scientologist and is a close friend of church leader David Miscavige.

Scientology is set of beliefs that were conceived of by former science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950s, beliefs that would ultimately form the basis of the Church of Scientology.

To its followers, and some governments around the world but not others, Scientology is granted the same status, or in the case of the United States, tax privileges, afforded to other religions. In 1993, the IRS formally granted the Church of Scientology tax exempt status, ending what the New York Times called “four decades of costly and bitter court fights.”

But its critics have long accused the Church of Scientology of being a cult-like organization that employs extreme measures to intimidate or silence its critics, including former followers who have decided to leave the church. In recent years some of those former members have gone public with their opposition to Scientology. One of the most high profile has been former The King of Queens star Leah Remini, who called Scientology an “extremist religion.”

Cruise’s latest movie, Mission: Impossible 6 — Fallout,” opened as the No. 1 movie in America this weekend.
