A 19-year-old woman broke her foot and injured her back Saturday when she jumped off the Daytona Beach Pier and tried to save a drowning boy, according to a report by the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
Hanna Pignato was working around 8 p.m. at Joe’s Crab Shack on the pier when she saw a group of people gathering on the restaurant rooftop. Her friend calling 911 and alerted authorities about a boy being pulled north of the pier by a rip current, the News-Journal reported.
Pignato, a swimmer and surfer, leaped from the pier but had forgotten about the sand bar below, the newspaper reported.
Pignato is recovering after surgery.
The boy was rescued and hospitalized as a precaution, the News-Journal reported.
