Will ash from the volcano head toward Florida?

The volcanic eruption Friday on the island of St. Vincent generated an ash plume that soared 20,000 feet over the southeastern Caribbean.

But ash from the La Soufriere volcano is unlikely to reach Florida, the National Weather Service said Friday.

Barry Baxter, meteorologist with the weather service’s Miami office, said current winds are blowing to the east and south, which would keep the ash cloud from traveling the 1,500 miles to Florida.

“At this point, it doesn’t look like we’re going to get anything from it,” he said.

Wind directions could change, he said. But the current change anticipated over the weekend would continue to send the ash cloud to the southeast or southwest, depending on the altitude.

“Right now, we don’t expect much change at this point,” he said.
