Blizzard also released an accompanying blog post Tuesday to break down how the skin came to fruition.
"We knew that a dragon theme would be a banger skin," Overwatch lead concept artist David Kang said in the post.
According to Blizzard, Zhulong Sombra translates to "torch dragon" in Chinese, and was designed to honor Grand Finals MVP Jae-Won "Lip" Lee’s performance on the damage hacker.
From her dynamic Shanghai Dragons back tattoo to her ornate armor and headgear, the special Sombra skin features plenty of Chinese mythology and futuristic Overwatch tech in the champions' signature color palette of red, yellow and black.
"[Chinese dragons are] a bit different from Western dragons, so we searched the internet for reference images and checked with localization," Kang said. "We really wanted to hone in on features such as the horns on the crown and the eyebrows and whiskers on the dragon to pay homage to the Shanghai Dragons and Chinese culture.
"Over the years we found that the fans really like the skins that are more obvious and representative of the team colors and logos. So this time around we decided to go all-out, use all the Shanghai Dragons colors and also implemented the logo to the skin itself."
Marking the start of the fifth year of the league, the Overwatch League 2022 Season will kick off on May 5, with LA Gladiators vs. New York Excelsior at 3 p.m. ET.
